SNP leader Alex Salmond has been elected First Minister. He was supported by the Lib Dems while the Tories abstained.

I laughed at hearing Salmond described as a man so smug he would drink is own bathwater.

He’s quite subdued at the moment – perhaps because the SNP are in a precarious position.

Unable to push through their programme, it’s hard to see how there could be a referendum election initiated by the SNP at the end of the term.

I was surprised that there was no attempt to scupper Salmond’s bid for first minister. I guess the Liberals would prefer opposition…

It will be interesting to see how Brown responds to Salmond.

Well, I am guessing that the Liberals are trying to disassociate themselves from Labour given the meltdown that is happening down South. I expect that most of Salmond’s economic policies will not be opposed, as they are in the interests of capital. Then Salmond will probably get even more business support for the SNP, while claiming that a referendum can’t be held, because supporters for independence are in a minority in parliament.
